The Ghosts in the Code: Who is John Doe and What is Lorem Ipsum?

What is Lorem Ipsum and who is John Doe

If you have ever built a website, signed a legal contract, or designed a digital brochure, you have crossed paths with two of the most famous entities on earth. They are everywhere, yet they do not actually exist.

Meet John Doe and Lorem Ipsum: the ultimate placeholders of the modern world.

While they seem like dry, utilitarian tools, their origins stretch across centuries of legal battles, tragic accidents, and ancient Roman philosophy. Here is the true story behind the digital world’s favorite stand-ins.

John Doe: The World’s Most Famous Nobody

WHO: A legal pseudonym for an anonymous or unidentified person.
WHAT: A placeholder name used in courts, medical facilities, and police investigations.
WHEN: Dating back to the 14th century (King Edward III).
WHY: To protect privacy or allow legal action when a true identity is unknown.

The "Why" and "What"

In legal terms, a placeholder name is required when a real name is unknown, needs to be withheld for safety, or when a hypothetical person is being used in an example. If the individual is female, she becomes Jane Doe. If a case involves a baby or a family, names like Baby Doe or Johnny Doe step in.

The History: How it Begated

The origin of John Doe goes back to medieval England during the reign of King Edward III. There was a legal procedure known as the Action of Ejectment. Under ancient feudal law, a landowner trying to evict a non-paying tenant had to jump through massive legal hoops.

To bypass the slow system, lawyers invented a legal fiction involving two imaginary characters:

  • John Doe (the fictional tenant who allegedly leased the land)
  • Richard Roe (the fictional evictor who threw John Doe out)

The real landlord would sue “Richard Roe” in the name of “John Doe.” The courts fully understood the trick, but it allowed property disputes to be settled quickly. While English law eventually retired the concept, the American legal system kept it alive. Today, if a hospital admits an unconscious patient with no ID, they are admitted as John/Jane Doe until their real identity is uncovered.

Lorem Ipsum: The Philosophy Behind the Filler Text

If John Doe is the placeholder for people, Lorem Ipsum is the placeholder for ideas. It is the scrambled, quasi-Latin text used by graphic designers and web developers to mock up layouts before the real copy is written.

The "Why" and "How"

When you look at a beautiful website design, your brain naturally wants to read the text. If the text says, “This is a great sentence about our amazing corporate product sales team,” you start judging the product, not the font or layout.

Lorem Ipsum solves this. It has a perfectly natural distribution of letters and word lengths in English, making it look like real text without distracting the reader.

The Origin: When and Who Created It?

For centuries, people assumed Lorem Ipsum was just random, meaningless gibberish chopped up by an unknown 16th-century printer. However, in the 1980s, a Latin professor named Richard McClintock went on a literary detective hunt.

McClintock looked up a remarkably rare Latin word in the text—consectetur—and traced it back to a real book written in 45 BC by the famous Roman philosopher Cicero.

The text comes from Cicero’s philosophical treatise De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (“On the Extremes of Good and Evil”). The iconic opening line we know today:

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…”

Is actually a scrambled layout of Cicero’s original text:

“…neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” (Translation: “Neither is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain…”)

In the 1960s, a type company called Letraset popularized the text on rub-on transfer sheets. In the 1980s, Aldus Pagemaker baked it into digital desktop publishing, cementing it as the internet’s universal layout text.
